Lake Pend Oreille


Pronounced “lake pond-i-ray,” Lake Pend Oreille is a breathtakingly beautiful area that is a family vacation destination for good reason. Located near Schweizter Mountain in Sandpoint, Idaho, the lake is the fifth deepest lake in the U.S. with a depth of 1,150 feet in some areas.

Why is it such an amazing spot? Not only is this lake huge, providing you with unlimited boating activities during the summer, it’s also fed by the Clark Fork River, the Pack River, and drains via the Pend Oreille River, giving you ample opportunity for some amazing whitewater rafting adventures. In addition, the area is surrounded by the Kaniksu National Forest and the Coeur D’Alene National Forest with trails for hiking, biking, bird and animal watching. While exploring the area, you could see black and Grizzly bears, coyotes and bobcats, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, elk, gray wolves, and moose, among many other species.

To the north and west of the lake, the Cabinet Coeur d’Alene, and Selkrik Mountain white-capped ranges tower over the area, providing the most spectacular views. Fish the lake and catch rainbow trout, lake trout, perch, black crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, whitefish, walleye, and more.

Not far away, you can also get some amazing summer fun in at Lake Couer d’Alene. Between these two lakes, you'll summer vacation will fill up with more activities than you can count. In addition, these lakes have become summer vacation destinations for generations of families who come back year after year.
