Sun Valley

Sun Valley and Ketchum are not strangers to greatness. These sister towns have been beloved by visitors for a very long time, long before it played part in the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Long History as a Vacation Spot

With a great location, Sun Valley is situated just out of Ketchum Idaho, in the Wood River Valley in the interior of the central Idaho Rock Mountains. Surrounded by peaks like Bald Mountain that climb to 9,200 plus feet. The in the vicinity of the rugged Sawtooth Mountains known as the “American Alps.” The southern tip of Sawtooth National Forest and the Challis National Forest engulf this magnificent resort region.

The recent strings of celebrities to call this great mountain destination home are actually late on the scene. You see, Ketchum was the favored home and final resting place of Ernest Hemingway long before Clint Eastwood ever saw the place. Eastwood was a boy of nine when Hemingway first visited. Like most mountain and ski towns, Ketchum began as a silver mining town, and then became the second largest sheep and lamb shipping station on earth. Finally, came the fame of Sun Valley and the ski resorts, but the magic of this area has been long celebrated, as far back as its founding in the 1800’s. The town  of Ketchum was named after David Ketchum, a man whose independence captured the spirit of the Wild West—a spirit that still pervades the mountains there to this day.
