The towns of Buena Vista and Salida, Colorado make for a great all season recreation area! Buena Vista is considered by many to be the capital of whitewater rafting for the United States. There is an abundance of river rafting companies offering half, full and multi-day trips on the Arkansas, Dolores, Clear Creek and other rivers. Approximately 130 miles from Denver, the town of Salida boasts 15 mountain peaks of 14,000 feet or more. This area is often referred to as the "Fourteener" Country. The fourteeners provide a spectacular backdrop for rafting, rock-climbing, backpacking, fishing, hiking and camping among other activities. Take a llama trek up a fourteener or go horseback riding. The area is also popular for mountain biking, hiking, hunting, golfing and just about any other outdoor activity that comes to mind including soaking year-round in nearby world famous natural hot springs.

Incorporated in 1880, Salida is known for its mild temperatures, abundant recreation and blossoming arts scene. This charming historic town was recently named as one of the ‘Ten Best Places to Live” by the Fine Living Program on HGTV. The area lodging and accommodations options are numerous and range from camping to motels, hotels and nice resorts. Cabins and vacation homes are also available in and around Salida.
For the off-road enthusiast, Buena Vista is a dream. Just southeast of Buena Vista is the Four Mile multi-use recreational area with maps and trail signs to indicate roads open to four wheel drive, jeeping and ATV tours. West of Buena Vista the road between Hancock and Tincup is a great place for four-wheeling. The road visits the Mary Murphy Gold Mine and other remnants of the Gold Rush days.
Kayak or canoe the Arkansas River that runs through town and try the slalom river course that is set up there. After all of that hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing and trekking, come and relax in one of the many restaurants in the area. Dining choices range from American cuisine to numerous varieties of international culinary delights. As for nightlife, the area has everything from taverns, concerts and outdoor events to theatre groups and gallery openings. Be sure to catch the summer moonlight movies at Salida's Riverside Park.
