The area we of Sunset Ranch work in is the Swamp Park, Mad Creek Lakes, and Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area of Routt National Forest. This is a primitive area in the heart of the 1,125,000-plus acres that comprise the Routt. The area is accessible by horseback and foot travel only. Elevations range from approximately 7,000 feet at the ranch to 8,500 at Swamp Park to 11,000 near the top of the Continental Divide, where many mountain lakes lie. Trout fishing in these lakes and high streams can be great.

Wildlife common to the area include mule, deer, elk, black bear, coyote, an occasional mountain lion, beaver, grouse, ptarmigan, and many small animals. During a stay at a campsite, the Canadian Jay, or "Camp Robber" as we call them, soon discover the goodies available and become quite at ease with their human visitors. An evening breeze may carry to you the "bark" of a cow elk calling her babe in for the night or the serenade of a pack of coyotes.
