River Valley

The jewel of River Valley is Hartford, which sits on the banks of the Connecticut River. It is the home of the Mark Twain House and Museum, where the famous author created many of his well-known characters.

Things to Do

This summer, head to the Connecticut Science Center in Downtown New Haven. Whizz down a virtual ski slope in the Ski Simulator, or introduce science to your children in the KidSpace, which is for children ages three through six.

Another fun area is the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk. Shop, eat, or just stroll through this outdoor mall. Work off the meal in the health club or simply have a spa day in one of the wellness facilities.

If you need to get out of the city, head down to Middletown, and enjoy the beauty that is Wadsworth Falls State Park. Take in some fishing, grilling, or swimming. Enjoy a hike with the family, or cross-country ski on one of the many trails in the park. While you’re in the area, take a trip back in time at the Dinosaur State Park. This National Historic Landmark features a diorama of the Connecticut Valley as it would have looked during the Triassic period. You can also compare your handprint to a Jurassic dinosaur as you follow its tracks.

If you are near Bloomfield, see the sights from above as you float over the Farmington River Valley in a hot air balloon at Sky Endeavors. Do you like flying high? Then, check out the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, and walk amongst 80 giant aircraft, including planes dating back to World War II. Or, view picturesque East Windsor aboard a historic trolley card. Learn about the history of the trolley car inside the Bertinuson Visitor Center.
